Starbucks; Observations

I sit in Starbucks watching people, instead of working.
I’m intrigued by the level of unconsciousness...
I watch a business man pick up crumbs from his lap and hurriedly shove them into his mouth.
A middle-aged women screams into her phone (presumably to a nanny) that her daughter forgot her lunch; she informs the receiver––and everyone else in Starbucks––that she’s on her way to the gym, so they would have to handle it.
A father and his daughter practice “high fives.”
And a muscle man checks out his body via the reflection in the window; he glances to make sure nobody observed this––I laugh in reaction.
The employees shout orders across the bar;
It’s just another Tuesday in Hollywood.

Meet Me At The Mall

I’m sitting at the mall searching for creativity.
Drawn to the food court where similar Mac men and women peck at their keyboards, while people––who take the shape of characters from any random 80′s film––devour food-on-a-stick.
For every sentence I complete, I reward myself with a thirty-second scan of my surroundings:
Moms comforting crying kids,
Old ladies playing mahjong,
Old men playing chess,
Teenagers plotting their next takedown,
And me––fighting for my next great idea;
Maybe some MSG from Panda Express will help me?

People Watching at Starbucks

Young or old, everyone has their swagger.

Swinging, swishing, hunched or pulled up-

Fast and furious, or

Slow and steady, both on a mission:

Coffee! Java. A cup-of-Joe

Creatures of habit.  In need of caffeine, and socialization.

Starbucks is more than a coffee house, it's an anthropological classroom in the university of life.

Saturday Mornings at Starbucks

A steady line of cranky customers waiting for their caffeine fix-
That will not stop me from enjoying my morning check-in.
Catching up on world news with my New York Times iPhone app,
Visiting with friends,
Meeting new neighbors,
People watching and of course listening to juicy gossip from the shady characters at the next table.
I love Saturday mornings at Starbucks!

Going To The Getty

The perfect Saturday afternoon-
Wine on the terrace,
Walk through the Herb Ritts collection of photos,
Beer on the veranda,
Walk through the beautifully manicured garden.
European tourists everywhere!
Delicious people watching...
The perfect museum getaway.

People Watching At Starbucks

A man in his sixties wearing booty shorts with his sagging butt hanging out-
A beautiful woman with a shaved head eating pasta salad with her fingers-
The cackle of a strange man with a bright pink mohawk about two feet high-
The employees talking shit about the customers while not working behind the counter-
The phony Hollywood meetings where each person continues to talk about their amazing project loud enough for everyone to overhear-
The tourists that eat their pastry wishing that it tasted half as good as the ones they eat back home-
The cute little girl that demands her fathers full attention, while her mother finishes her cold cup of coffee-
And all of these people staring back at me like I'm judging them-
I am. And it's amazing!
I love to people watch at Starbucks!
