Star–Studded Night.

Rubbing elbows with celebrities,
Is a lot like rubbing elbows with non-celebrities;
You're in an overcrowded venue trying to look your best, smile, and at "cool" while you push your way to the front of the bar...
Except you can't ignore the fact that you just nudged Steve Buscemi back into place.
Welcome to Hollywood.

Hollywood; Golden

The sun rises over Sunset Boulevard;
Golden light bounces from the billboards.
Even the movie stars in oversized ads shine in this town.
The bright warm glow offers a false comfort;
Everything is beautiful in Hollywood––until you turn out the lights.

Rehearsal

I love the dark cool vacuum of a soundstage;
Scattered pieces of scenery––half familiar sets from movies and television shows you love.
The smell of burning lights.
Avoiding craft services to and from the dressing rooms––do you want to be in shape on camera or not?
Performers gathered in a corner of the set reviewing the choreography;
Laughter ensues, while I try not to sweat through my costume.
And then, action!
I love being on a set––living my childhood dream.

Awareness

I live in a town full of glamor, fame and ego-driven success;
Los Angeles has a reputation (almost as famous as the movie stars who live here) for being fake.
Admittedly, there are a lot of bodies that have been enhanced, résumés that have been exaggerated and conversations that are less than honest.
Despite the negative aspects, Southern California is surrounded with art, culture, massive mountains and an impressive coastline.
The sun shines, wildlife thrives and those who seek adventure can find it anywhere in the form of almost anything from snowboarding to surfing, opera to  art openings.
So how does a location with so many extraordinary features invoke such negative attention.
Let’s be honest––everything ego-driven in LA can be said of New York City, Paris, London, Rome; yet Hollywood takes the blame.
Los Angeles (the city itself) has become an analogy for the people who comprise the city.
How does fixating on the negative aspects of a circumstance; whether it be a person, city or dream serve me?
How can I shift my perspective to help others become aware of the beauty that surrounds them––wherever they are?

Screening

The excitement of meeting up with the cast and crew months later to watch the final product.
I'm full of nervous energy in anticipation of my performance on a big screen.
The first time my face pops up on screen, I relax.
It's so cool to see my ridiculous reaction right next to movie star Paul Rudd.
The years of hustling, hard work, and perseverance feel small next to my larger than life alter ego.
I love this business. It's important to acknowledged my feelings in moments like this; there's no telling when my next opportunity to shine will come, and I don't want to give up before it does.
Making it in Hollywood means never giving up.

Inspiration or Not...

Some days the inspiration flows like beer at the Super Bowl;
Other times, it's as tough as a steak at Sizzler to dream up a topic.
The point of a daily creative writing, is to maintain the focus and habit.
So here I sit at my computer without a clue as to what I'm talking about.
Rambling senselessly like many of the winners of last nights Golden Globe awards.
Perhaps that is why I'm without a spark––aside from Tina and Amy's perfectly timed dazzling display of wit, snark and intelligence.  The show was boring and uninspired.
Proving that everybody has "off days"  even in Hollywood.

The Golden Globes

It's the official kickoff of the Gay season!
Hollywood's hottest A-list stars walk the red carpet;
Diamonds, sequins and stilettos––and that's just for Ryan Seacrest.
The rest of the divas are all in their hotel rooms surrounded by stylists.
Who will win?
Who will lose?
Who will get too drunk and act like a total ass?
I can't wait to find out.
Let the fashion, speeches and closeted men pretending to be straight begin!

Movie Marathon

The escape from our day to day lives.
Lost in a giant screen full of beautiful characters.
Delicious popcorn;
Reclining velvet seats.
And all for only $32 a ticket!?

But getting caught up in the magic is worth every penny!

Dear Bagel,

I realize that carbs are considered the Devil in Hollywood-
But I cannot resist your glossy hard outer shell and warm doughy insides.
Even without cream cheese, you rock my world.
Please do me a favor, stay away from my love-handles and booty, and I will continue to savor you every morning from now until the end of time.
Love,
Matthew

There's No Business Like Showbusiness!

I always feel guilty for finding loopholes and using them,
Until I remember that a shadier person created the loophole to be used!
What's that old saying?  "Fake it, till you make it."
...and leverage everything you've got!

Audition

The excitement of a potential job,
Reading through the script, making choices and preparing a character,
Running lines over and over, until you have it in your body,
Picking out the right clothes to convey the part,
Signing in and waiting in the lobby with twenty other guys that look JUST like you,
The awkward small talk in the casting office–then you slate your name and the scene begins and before you know it, your done...
Walk out feeling confident, you gave it your all and rocked it out!
Then, you wait.  You try to forget about it.  Every time it pops into your head you think, "Wouldn't that be awesome?"
But you let it go, and wait for the next audition.

Sunshine and blue skies,
Swimming in a sea of fame;
Dream or make-believe?

The Art of Balance in Hollywood

It's so easy to get wrapped up in the LA scene-
Hustling for meetings, pitching your fabulous projects, relentless SELF-promotion;
You start to buy into the idea that you're only a success if you have two TV pilots in production, a movie deal with NBCUniversal, your own reality TV show and 10 BILLION followers on Instagram!
It's exhausting, but you're trapped into this belief that if you take a break you'll lose EVERYTHING!
When my mom comes to visit, I'm forced to STOP.  Family reminds you that there are far more important things in life than how you look on camera.  My loved ones knew me when I was just a little kid with a huge imagination and an enormous dream.
They continue to support my adventure, offering their love and encouragement.
I strive to live with balance in my life-  Naturally, I'm not perfect.  I do, however, fight to be a better person every day.
Therefore, in honor of my thirty-SOMETHING birthday, and my family in town I'm going to give myself the week off.
There will be plenty of time to conquer Hollywood next week, and if "Hollywood" forget who I am in a week, I'll just stage a "comeback" by checking myself into trendy rehab facility- I may have to do that anyway after this week!

I'm So Hollywood

Nothing like a jam-packed schedule in LA;
Shooting a fun sketch for some friends with their own cabaret show in New York,
Then off to choreograph fifty 5th graders through the enchanted forest,
Next stop power lunch with industry friends,
Followed up with a full night of production on our next TV adventure.
The glamorous life is less less attractive when you don't have time to breathe.
Still, I love creative productivity!

Meetings, Production, PR... Oh My!

Up at the crack of dawn,
Ready for a full day.
Morning meetings,
Creatively peeking the interest of “suits.”
Wrap up meeting with manager,
Followed by pre-production work,
With enough time for a “power PR” lunch meeting.
It’s not even 3 PM and I’m ready to go to sleep!
All in an LA days work…

That's A Wrap!

It's always a blast to be on a set...
Especially when you get to hang out with a group of talented (and hilarious) dancers!
"Bunheads" was a blast!
But all good things must WRAP!
Thanks again Marguerite Derricks.
